For FHE this week we talked about Sharing Goodness (referencing Elder Bednar's recent talk at BYU Education Week) and watched a YouTube clip of David Archuleta singing "I'm Trying To Be Like Jesus". We also wrote down words of encouragement or positive thoughts on blue tags--along with the hashtag #sharegoodness... that we'd use a few days later during our follow-up activity from the lesson.
On Thursday, we took a quick day trip to Scottsdale and bought 30 yellow balloons (to commemorate Marcelle's recent birthday). We taped the blue tags on the balloons and then walked around an outdoor shopping area handing them to strangers to brighten their day. The reactions of the recipients were perfect. Comments included "Wow, this is so nice" or "My son/daughter loves balloons!" or "What a fun idea, this is great."
It was a little tricky trying to photograph the recipients while untangling balloons, holding 2 bags, and carrying Afton part of the time. At least I got one picture of a little girl getting her balloon. My favorite was when we gave one to the Valet parking guy and he tied it to his station-I loved it! After we handed them out, we could see them dotting the area on strollers, tied to kids hands, at the valet parking station, on a janitor's cart, and on chairs at an outdoor restaurant seating. It was a memorable day for Team Calder sharing goodness! We learned a lot and had an enjoyable time talking about what we'd deducted from this experience.
